What A Thrill! Last week I spent 5 days "back in school" when I had the incredible opportunity to learn from Peter Read Miller, Steve Fine and a handful of some of the other top sports photographers in the US.  They were long days, carrying lots of gear but what a thrill.  The highlight was the opportunity to photograph an SEC Football game as the University of Tennessee hosted the Ohio U Bobcats from the Mid America Conference at Neyland Stadium.  Here's a glimpse of what I captured.  To see more of the gallery simply click on the collage below.

Senior Portraits - Annika I had a wonderful portrait session on Lake Minnetonka on Friday night.  The weather and the company couldn't have been better, though I think both Annika and I would have enjoyed a little less heat!  It was fun to photograph Annika in a an environment that she clearly loves.  I'm definitely signing up for sailing lessons from her sometime...

Defying Gravity I photographed a new sport last week, thankfully from the ground!  These four brave souls boarded the small plane in a cornfield in Baldwin, Wisconsin and then proceeded to jump out with their tandem companions 13000 feet up in the sky.  I was told it was "quite the rush"...certainly was for the mother and wife watching from below!

China Trip - Day 8 Xi'an Ni Hao -
Yesterday we started the day a bit later because we had gotten to the hotel so late the night before. Despite a few tired eyes in the morning, though, we all perked up when we got to the site of the terra cotta warriors just outside of Xian.

The Warriors protect the tomb of the Emperor  Qin (pronounced "chin") of the Qin dynasty.  They are truly amazing both in the detail of each one and in the sheer volume of them. There are over 6000 warriors at the site. The area is also still an active archeological site as well, which means that historians and students still actively excavate new items.

While at the warrior site, we also had lunch and we were treated to a special show. We got to see local cooks make two different types of noodles right in front of us. Shaved noodles are, just that, shaved off of a large block of dough into a pot of water. They are covered with a sauce and served.

The stretched noodles were even more of a show, being stretched by hand until very thin and then cooked only for a few seconds before being doused in broth and served. Delicious.

After the warriors, a few of us were
Able to visit Mr Tu's house here in Xian. Mr Tu is our travel agent here in China and he arranges all of our visits. He was kind enough to show us his home so that we could have a clearer sense of how local Chinese people live here in Xian.

Dinner was an extravagant affair. We took the opportunity to celebrate Margaret Wong's time at Breck and the amazing number of trips she's led. We also celebrated a couple of birthdays: James Lee (Tarin's dad) and Taylor Hendrickson.

It was a nice day and it was nice to end with a celebration.

Today we head to some more local sites in and around Xian and have an opportunity to get more of a sense of this area in particular.

China Trip - Day 7 Yangshou then on to Xian We have arrived in Xian.
I think that it's safe to say that we are all pretty tired now. Our flight from Yangshuo was vet late and we didn't get to the hotel until almost 2am.

But, despite the late night last night, yesterday was a great day. Our morning started with a visit to the Yangshuo Foreign Language School. It was fascinating to visit a local school in an area that is more countryside that urban. The kids were great and many spoke English fairly well. By 7th grade most had already been studying English for four or five years.
Our kids did a short performance for them and it was nice to see them do that. A few students wen managed to trade things for the jacket from the Yangshuo school uniform. It was funny.

After lunch in Yangshuo, we headed back to Guilin. There we had about two hours to explore shops and parks on our own. The kids scored some great deals on souvenirs and trinkets and really practiced some of their bargaining. The market was a great place for even the most novice of the Chinese speakers (the adults on the trip) to practice.

After dinner at our Guilin hotel we were treated to a fun waterfall show by the hotel. While the show was pretty nice (think Bellagio water, lights, music, etc) the highlight there were the small flying toys that a vendor was selling right there. As a group we bought a ton of them and we were even treated to some heroics by one parent who saved a toy that had fallen on moving car.

Then it was a late flight from Guilin to Xian. We are having a late start this morning since we were in so late last night. But we should be in for some treats today. The highlight will be our visit to the terra cotta warriors!!

China Trip - Day 6 Yangshou Good Morning -
We woke up today in Yangshuo after a lovely and somewhat more relaxing day yesterday.  In the morning we had a lovely boat ride along the Li Jiang or the Li River. This is considered to be one of the most picturesque places in all of China and is even featured on the 20 元 bill. It was gorgeous and gave us a nice chance to relax while taking in the gorgeous scenery.

From the ride, we headed to lunch and back to our hotel. At our hotel we had a demonstration and mini lesson on Chinese water color painting. It was very cool and a handful of students even got to try their hand at it. The teacher, Master Ye, even did a quick painting of one of our students! A very cool activity.

After the painting, a number of students and parents went over to West street, an area well known in Yangshuo for its exciting shops and restaurants. The students love experimenting with their Chinese as they try to bargain for deals in the markets.

Dinner and the evening last night were laid back affairs. We had a bit more free time, which helped give everyone a bit of a breather.

Today we visit a local school and we had back to Guilin in order to fly North to Xian.

China Trip - Day 6 Guilin Ni Hao from Yangshuo -
Boy, do we have a jam-packed itinerary. Yesterday was another full day, and though I think we are all abut tired, we are also energized by the fact that each day brings new and unimagined a experiences.

Yesterday we began the morning with a visit to the Seven Stars park in Guilin. It was a perfect day to walk through a park. We saw a waterfall, some local musicians playing traditional instruments in a gazebo, and a few monkeys. I'm not sure I expected to encounter wild monkeys in China. You can tell, though, that we've moved further south, as the greenery is thicker and more lush and the weather is far more humid. Though it's not a jungle exactly, we are clearly closer to that type of climate than we've been before.

We also visited the Tea Research Institute. This is another of those "museums," though because we were able to enjoy a traditional tea service and to spend time outside exploring the actual tea plants, it wasn't quite as intense as some of the others.

After lunch we had a few minutes to walk through an outdoor market area before boarding the bus. A few folks picked up some trinkets while others opted to let "kissing fish" nibble the dead skin off of their feet. Whatever folks did, though, I think that the consensus was that it was fun to walk outside that much.

We left Guilin in the afternoon and began our trip to Yangshuo. This town is far more removed from the more urban settings we've seen thus far. The drive was a fascinating experience in and of itself. The countryside was pretty empty other than farms, and we'd occasionally pass through a small town. Our driver seemed to have no fear, though, as we sped down a bumpy country road.

After dinner in our hotel in Yangshuo, we took a short ride over to an outdoor amphitheater to watch an epic performance called impressions. Staged on the Li river with the limestone hills as the backdrop, Impressions told an ancient Chinese folk tale using an impressive array of lights, music, and a cast of hundreds of local performers. It was quite the experience.  At one point a young woman is shown dancing on a large crescent moon, which, though there was some debate as to whether it was the moon or a banana, was a particularly stunning moment in the show.

Today we have the chance to explore Guilin a bit more and to learn about traditional Chinese painting. We even get to stay in the same hotel for a second night!

China Trip - Day 5 Nanjing to Guilin Good morning from Guilin -
Wow was yesterday a busy one! We packed up our belongings in Nanjing in the morning, saying goodbye to our fourth hotel in five four days.  We headed for the museum commemorating the Nanjing Massacre. This was one of those experiences that I think we were all glad that we had, but that none of us would describe as fun. The story of the loss of over 300,000 Chinese lives was incredibly powerful and the images and artifacts that the museum uses to illustrate the history make it that much more real. A very moving morning.

We continued from there to lunch at a local restaurant. Having travelled a few miles further I order to get to Nanjing, we noticed a few new dishes. One was a crispy rice "shell " covered in a savory sauce. Another highlight of lunch was learning that the mystery meat that many of us enjoyed at lunch turned out to be frog. Our meals are certainly part of the adventure.

After lunch, we had an chance to drive near Margaret's old home in Nanjing where she lived as a child. Since in Nanjing, she's been sharing many stories of her childhood and her time in Nanjing.

We then visited the memorial of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, who is often regarded as the George Washington of Modern China. In order to reach the memorial, though, we had to climb 392 steps! We made the trek, though, and were rewarded with spectacular views of the city. We also had the chance to enjoy Margaret leading a group of Breck students and Chinese teenagers in singing the Chinese national anthem together "qi lai, qi lai, qi lai..."

Though we'd already had a long day by that point, there was still more to come. We drove to the airport to prepare for our trip to Guilin. Our flight was delayed a bit, but we made it eventually.  We were even treated to a midnight snack of pizza, French fries, and some amazing fried and candied bananas after our arrival.

Today we explore Guilin and then head to Yangshuo where we will spend two nights before heading to Xian.

China Trip - Day 4 Nanjing We've had internet difficulties so Tom Taylor and I have decided to combine our efforts.  His nightly email summary is now included as my blog commentary....

Yesterday we left Wuxi and headed for Nanjing.

Before leaving Wuxi we explored the pearl "museum" in Wuxi and learned all about how pearls are formed in freshwater oysters. I also got a terrific lesson in bargaining from Margaret Wong ... Needless to say she's a pro.

We ended our time in Wuxi with a nice lunch in a restaurant that used to be only for government officials. Now, however, under the new administration, the restaurant is open to the public. The new president of China has declared that special treatment for government officials is to end.

We then boarded our bus for Nanjing and had a nice LONG ride. It gave me an opportunity to become the student for a couple of hours while I learned about Chinese characters and more about the structure of the language. I continue to be impressed by our students and their ability to speak in and explain Chinese.

Our arrival in Nanjing was marked by our passage through the city wall which borders most of Nanjing. Many folks have remarked that there is something about Nanjing that feels a bit more familiar than some of the cities we've visited earlier.

Our first stop was Xuan Wu park, which borders a lake near the city wall. Like the park in Wuxi, it was fun to explore an area that is so clearly frequented by locals and to see our kids interacting so freely (and in Chinese) with folks they meet. Despite the fact that some of our kids couldn't resist the lure of Chinese McDonald's, it was an exceptionally pleasant afternoon.

From the park we enjoyed dinner with a Breck Alum, Andrew Upjohn and his parents and his new wife, who is Chinese. Andrew lives in Nanjing, though he and his wife will be moving back to the states soon.

Following dinner, we had a few minutes to explore the Confucius temple night market. The area used to be a real temple, but it has, in recent years, become a market. An array of shops and lights filled the streets and I think it was a highlight for many.

As we arrived at our hotel in Nanjing for the night, we met a new Breck family. Albert Kong  lives in Nanjing and will be a ninth grader in the fall.  He and his parents met us at the hotel to welcome us to Nanjing. They will join us today for our exploration of Nanjing.

China Trip - Day 3 Suzhou to Wuxi Day 3 in China - We had an early morning departure from the hotel in Suxhou this morning to get to our first stop - the Lingering Garden in Suxhou.  It's Sunday in China and a holiday at that so everything was quite crowded.  The garden was quite pretty with signs of Spring ready to explode.  We hope for similar signs upon our return to Minneapolis!  We took lots of photos and has been the case throughout the trip, many in our group were stopped and asked to pose for photos.  After the garden we visited a silk embroidery factory, grabbed a quick lunch and made a mad dash to the train station where we boarded a high speed train for Wuxi.  It was remarkable to see 67 people successfully make it through the crowded station and into a single car and even more remarkable that all 67 got off in Wuxi!  Our afternoon was spent in a teapot factory and then at a park on the lake here.

China Trip - Day 2 in Shanghai We woke up Friday morning to another wonderful breakfast at the JW Marriott - more food choices available here than most could ever imagine!  The "sweets" bar was certainly a favorite!  Once the luggage and busses were loaded we were off to walk the Bund in the older, more European section of Shanghai then toured a silk factory.  Our lunch, hosted by James Yang & his family was AMAZING in a trendy restaurant, Shanghai Tang, in the New World market area.  We've said goodbye to Shanghai and are off to Suzhou for a day visit tomorrow....
